The roots...

Hi! 你好!

I'm Connie, a Chinese-Vietnamese American, born and raised in Philly. I'm a photographer, video editor, videographer, and motion graphics designer with a major in Film & Video from Drexel.

I have been hogging my mom's disposable and point + shoot cameras since '93. Eventually, I received my first very own digital camera in the 7th grade and haven't stopped documenting life since then.

LET'S DO THIS

What does "lotus + root" mean?

Growing up, my mom cooked me numerous lotus root dishes. Lotus root, a rhizome and root vegetable from which lotus flowers emerge, is a common ingredient in various Asian cuisines. It has funny holes, barely any taste, and a crispy yet starchy texture reminiscent of a cross between potato and radish. My mom's stir fries and hearty bone broths with lotus root became some of my most cherished favorites. Chances are, my mom shoved a large container of lotus root soup in my hands just last week. In the past few years, I've developed a profound connection to my Chinese and Vietnamese culture and identity and am finding deep solace in foods nostalgic to me. Food is very much an entire love language in Asian cultures and because of this, I wanted to inject one love into another love. I established lotus + root, LLC, drawing a direct connection to my roots (literally).

How about you?

Got a weird, funky idea? Or an emotional passion project? I'm your girl.

I strive to tell your story in the truest way, in its rawest form. As an empath, I tend to feel a lot. And sometimes, finding and emphasizing certain moments is the only way for me to express these feelings (and hopefully also make you feel deeply as I do).

ANOTHER FUN FACT: Picking the perfect song for your video is my favorite part of the video editing process.

Esther Castillo reached out in 2021 and asked if I was interested in editing a passion project. She was hurt yet inspired by the Atlanta spa shootings and the increased hate on Asians in America due to COVID. I agreed immediately, and this film was born.
